Octopus is an aquatic animal with multiple legs. Octopus normally stays underwater. As compared to other underwater creatures, octopus comes with a bit awkward physique. Octopus contains a big mount in the center of the body and also has large flexible legs.

As octopus does not have a Skelton, rather its body has made up of flexible muscles and tissues, which can make it easier for the octopus to change its shape and size while swimming in the water. Even more, its flexible body also makes it easier for the octopus to pass by underwater hills and narrow rocks.

However, when it comes to knowing about this aquatic animal, the most amazing question, another question that usually arises in mind is what do octopuses eat. Well, this post will surely help you to get some basic information about the stuff they usually eat. So, stick on this and learn some amazing things about octopuses.

What do Octopuses eat ?

When it comes to diet, size matters

Octopuses usually unabashed predators which mean they enjoy to hunt and kill what they eat. However, what octopuses love to eat usually depends on their size and where they are living. Octopuses are tough. Pound per pound.

Octopuses can take on quarry which is even armed with powerful defensive traits, for example, crabs. Even, sharks and dogfish can also become a victim of these gutsy but hungry octopuses. Although octopuses are too audacious and brave, but if these are being measured with few inches only then there are chances that it would not be able to fare too well against an adult crab or a shark.

Small octopuses

However, as baby octopuses are being measured merely in millimeters, therefore, at that stage the food of these octopuses is conformed of plankton. Octopuses may start from nanoplankton progressing to mesoplankton while growing in their size. However, the smaller species which never grow more than 10 or 12 inches lengthwise will normally stick to sea gastropods or other marine mollusks diet.

Medium octopuses

Medium-sized octopuses normally live in shallow water and have a quite varied diet as compared to smaller sized octopus’ species. Most of these octopuses prefer to go with crustaceans just like crabs and shrimp as well as gastropods such as mussels and clams.

The most common octopus which falls in this category is Octopus Vulgaris.

Credit : Mohamed Ahsan

Large-sized octopuses

When it comes to the particular specie of the octopuses which is capable of growing to various feet in length, for example, Giant Pacific Octopus usually goes with a much larger victim. These can eat small marine creatures along with the larger ones.

On the menu of the large-sized octopus, you can find shrimp, lobsters, crab, squid, different types of fish and other octopuses too. Even more, these can also eat shelled sea mollusks. Most interestingly, these octopuses are also known well because of eating dogfish, and sharks which are up to four feet long.

Knowing these categorized eating habits are surely going to let you understand what can be on the menu list of a crab in the best possible way.

Some Amazing Characteristics of Shark Skin

Along with various other characteristics that are making shark unique, shark skin is also being considered as unique in multiple ways. However, here we have brought some of the most amazing qualities of shark skin which will surely let you know why it is unique. So, here we go:

Texture of shark skin

Shark skin is also being characterized by its contrast between slippery appearance and rough tactile texture. It is because Shark skin is not made of traditional fish scales. Small teeth on skin surely sound creepy, but this can be the best description of what the scales which are making shark skin tactile look like.

These scales are actually attached to the skin at its base. While, the visible part of this is known as the crown, similar to the tooth crown. Even this crown ends up with a pointing tip which is facing towards the tail of the sharks. This is the reason why the texture of the shark skin is smooth when you are rubbing it in head to tail direction, but it feels rough when you are moving your hand in the opposite direction. In fact, sharp skin crowns are too rough that the ancient Greeks used it as a sand paper to make their wooden objects smoother.

Well, these crowns are sharper because most obviously these are being used to protect the skin of a shark. These scales are also serving as the first line of defense against coral reefs, rocky areas, marine litter, and parasites.

Color of shark skin

Sharks are usually drably counter-shaded which means that the bottom and top of the shark skin contains different color. However, when it comes to the color of the top side then it is usually darker than the bally or bottom side of the skin.

When the sharks are being viewed from the upper side then the top skin and water color look similar while similar is the case when it is being viewed from the bottom side because of the light-toned skin and light-colored water. This is what usually helps sharks to hunt in the perfect stealthy manner and make it able to sneak up and prey without being detected.

Skin thickness

Sharks usually come with the very think
skin especially whale sharks which contains up to 4 inches thick skin.

These are some of the amazing characteristics of the unique shark skin which are surely going to be effective for you to know.

Sea lions and seals live with dolphins and otters as sea lovers attracting people to beaches and aquariums. But after a thorough inspection, you may know the difference between sea lion vs seal. However, the differences are not very notable, but a good comparison between sea lion vs seal will show you the apparent differences.

Photographer : Zdeněk Macháček

Let’s have a look at the major differences between seal lion vs seal,

Sea Lion vs Seal

Flipper Length

There is a big difference in the length of
the flippers. Sea lions and seals have long fins. The most important thing is
that they can rotate their back flippers under their bodies, allowing them to
walk to the land. On the other hand, seals have short front flippers, and rear
flippers cannot turn under their bodies to let them walk. Variations in the length
of the flipper style also change the way these marine mammals swim.

Socialization

Sea lions gather regularly in groups, called colonies or rafts. Depending on the species, you can find sea lion rafts to enjoy the sun in small groups or in large groups that number in the thousands. In return, seals spend more time in the water and are less likely to be in a group. They meet at the beach once a year to mate.

Baby Seal smiling
Photographer : Amy Asher

Feet

Seals have a stubby and small flipper foot
covered with a thin webbing layer. When comparing sea lion vs seal feet, you
will notice some significant differences. Their little toes have a small paw.
Sea lions have more elegant and much longer looking fins and are often covered
with the skin.

Noise

Sea lions are very noisy. They love to bark, scream, and growl. Seals are quieter, usually voicing speak loudly in the ears and growling softer grunts and moans. This is because they gather in groups on the ground, while real seals spend more time in the water and are less social. Also, lions and sea seals communicate by high bark or high extrusion, while seals generally grunt gently to communicate.

Ears

Sea lions have small fins for their ears.
Seals do not have external ears, only small holes on each side of the head. Sea
lions have external ears that bulge from their heads. The seals, on the other
hand, have no external flap, but rather have earholes. This is why scientists
describe species of the Otariidae family as eared seals. The species of Phocidae
can be called seals without ears.

Sea lion posing in the sun
Photographer : Charlie Seaman

Mobility

Sea lions can walk on the ground by the
rotation of hind flippers forward and under their bodies, helping them to stand
on all four feet. While seals do not have a special flap joint, so they are
limited to cater pillaring or belly-flopping around.

Habitat

Both types of animals spend time in water and on land while the seals are habitant of life in the water. Although their bodies may seem chubby, seals are smaller and more dynamic as compared to sea lions.

On the other hand, sea lions can walk on the land by the rotation of hind flippers forward and under their massive bodies. That’s why they are more likely to work in marine and aquariums shows.

Considering these sea lions vs seal differences, you will be able to recognize them easily.

Whales beaching has been noted throughout history. Regarding the reasons why do whales beach themselves, scientists could not find a unique answer. Whales beaching refers to whales and dolphins that strand themselves on beaches.

Stranding is so rare that it does not pose a significant threat to any species. Bad weather, navigation errors, and hunting too close to the coast are some of the factors that may be the reason behind why do whales beach themselves.

Here are some of the reasons why do whales beach
themselves

Greater pollution

One of the reasons given by marine scientists
and biologists to explain why do whales beach themselves more often is that the increase in materials and
artificial chemicals causes more pollution in the ocean, which may result in
deformation of marine mammals, mentally and otherwise damage whales and poison
or kill marine mammals due to toxic chemicals.

Collision injuries with boats other artificial aquatic machines

As more and more ships enter the ocean for
global trade, the chances of whales to collide with the ships and injure themselves
are also growing, making them collapse accidentally.

Heartbreaking images of Blue Whale struck dead by ship as it slept

Natural diseases

Natural disease is one of the reasons why do whales beach
themselves. Just as humans suffer from natural diseases
and diseases, marine mammals may also be subject to natural diseases that are
beyond control.

Attacks from marine mammals

Whales can go to the beach to try to escape
or to find a cover of shark attacks or attacks of other marine mammals such as
killer whales.

Poison of various aquatic species

Although it is more difficult to find
adequate information on whales poisoned by other aquatic species, it is
certainly possible for a whale to poison and disorient itself, which makes it
swim towards the shore and is an answer to why do whales beach
themselves.

Red tides and relationships

Water pollution, environmental toxins, and rough weather are other possible causes of why do whales beach themselves. As presented by researchers. According to NOAA, poisonous red tides, which occur when microscopic algae bloom quickly and release toxins, affect not only whales but also filter-feed shellfish and marine food chains.

Nutrient deficiencies and disorientation

Nutrient deficiencies, weakness, and
disorientation caused by lack of food in whale feeding areas can lead whales to
shallow waters. According to Whitehead’s lab, they can track prey in shallow
waters.

Shoreline
sails

Killer whales may intentionally hunt for seals on the coast. Then they wait for the waves to return to the sea. This practice is most often seen in pods in Argentina; this habit is thought to be taught to the younger killer by the pod older members. Killer whales rarely become involuntary beaches.

Sonar effects

Some scientists believe that sonar signals
and other artificial underwater noises can contribute to beach events. The army
uses low and medium frequency active sonar to sense submarines as well as other
audio exercises. These frequencies can
be very deadly for some of the species.

Some of these theories are hard to prove on a large scale. However, it should be noted because each concept has the potential to why do whales beach themselves and is significant to find possible solutions to this problem, especially those that can be caused by the human contributions.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a marine
debris collection in the North Pacific. Marine debris is debris that ends in
seas, oceans as well as other large water bodies. This patch is located near
Eastern Garbage Patch and Japan.

This massive accumulation of plastic waste between California and Hawaii is increasing day by day…

Here are six great pacific garbage patch facts.

Discovered by Ocean Scientist and Captain Charles Moore

In the year 1997, boat captain and ocean scientist Charles Moore were cruising to California after completing a sailing race from LA to Hawaii Transpac. When Moore and his crew sailed in the northern Pacific Ocean, one of the ocean remote parts, they noticed huge amounts of plastic debris moving in the sea. A coworker of Moore called the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” the vast area of plastic debris, and the name has remained since.

Plastic in Great Pacific Garbage Patch Can Upset the Marine Food Chain

Plastics can be very damaging to marine life in gyre, and this is one of the great pacific garbage patch facts. The enormous mass of plastic floats on the surface of the ocean and blocks the sunlight important for plankton and algae survival. Plankton and algae are self-sufficient, and sunlight helps them produce their nutrients. If their survival is threatened, it could change the entire marine food chain alarmingly.

Ocean Cleanup device catches plastic in Great Pacific Garbage Patch
©The Ocean Cleanup

This Patch is one
of the Five Similar Patches

Although the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is
the largest and most polluted oceanic region in the world, it is by no means
the only patch in the world. This fact
is one of the great pacific garbage patch facts. The Great Pacific Garbage
Patch is located in the Gyre of the North Pacific and is one of the first ocean
gyres. Other important gyres include the North Atlantic Gyre, the South
Pacific Gyre, and Indian Ocean Gyre.

Plastic Will
Never Escape Once it Enters the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

The movement of ocean streams in circles
makes it extremely difficult to get plastic debris out of the Great Pacific
Group Patch area. The reason debris accumulates in these areas can be explained
by really noticing the marine role. The ocean gyre works like a huge circular
conveyor belt. This means that once the debris has entered, it becomes very
difficult to escape.

© National Geographic

Plastic is Not
Only Present on the Surface of the Patch, but Also Underwater

Plastic is not only present on the surface of the ocean but extends to the bottom of the sea. Some plastic types float more than others. Microplastics have been found in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch at all levels below the water level to the bottom of the ocean. Bottles tend to fall quickly on the bottom, while plastic bags usually float on the surface of the water. Other types of plastic can be suspended, without going to the surface or sinking to the bottom of the sea.

This Patch has
Decades-Old Plastic

Plastic production began in significant
numbers in the 1950s. Every piece of plastic produced still exists today. This
patch has decades-old plastic and is one of the many surprising great pacific
garbage patch facts. A plastic toy that you played as a kid always somewhere
could now be in a million small pieces, but the plastic is still plastic.

Cleaning up a large plastic pollution area as the Great Pacific Garbage
Patch cannot be done easily or quickly, but it’s important to keep more waste
out of the ocean, and that’s something that all world can help.

Sea turtles also known as marine turtles have
wandered the oceans for around 110 million years. These can be found throughout
the world, from California waters to the Coral Triangle warm beaches. Males of
sea turtles species never leave the oceans, while females descend to lay their
eggs on the sandy beaches amid the nesting season.

There are 7 species of sea turtles found in the world. Five of these species are found in and around Florida, all of which feed on a different diet. Wondering what do sea turtles eat?

Actually, all seven species have different dietary preferences. The diet of sea turtles is determined by the age and species. It is important to know the natural diets and dietary needs of each species of sea turtle to help them recover soundly.

Sea Turtles Diet – What do they eat ?

The diet varies by species. Some of the species
of sea turtles change their eating habits with age Sea turtles can be
carnivorous, herbivorous or omnivorous. The jaw structure of many species
refers to their diet.

Some of these species feed on jellyfish, sponges and other marine life. However, some turtles that have a stronger jaw feed on oysters. However, not all sea turtles eat meat.

Loggerheads get their name from their strong powerful jaws, used to eat shellfish & crustaceans. Favorite prey items include crabs, mussels and lobsters. Look for them feeding in coastal bays and estuaries and along the edge of the continental shelf.

The green turtle is an herbivorous animal that does not eat meat at all. Instead, they eat algae and play an important role in the conservation of coral reefs. If you are thinking of what do sea turtles eat, here is the detail of what do sea turtles eat

Loggerhead

Offspring are
omnivorous which means they eat both plants and animals, but adult carnivores
prefer whelks, conchs, and crabs.

Green

The fully
developed sea turtles are herbivorous and want to walk along the reef to get
rid of algae. Newborn turtles, however, are omnivorous.

Hawksbill

A bird’s beak
that gives it a name that allows hawksbill turtles to reach coral reef cracks to
access sea sponges and is all that they want.

Leatherback

Leatherbacks arealso known as gelatinivores. This means they eat only invertebrates, such as sea squirts and
jellyfish.

Flatback

This species of
sea turtle will eat everything from shrimp to seaweed.

Kemp’s
ridley

Meat is the
only thing on the Kemp menu, with a strong preference for crabs.

Olive
ridley

Another type of
delicious animal feeds on sea cucumber, jelly, fish and many other animals and
plants.

Some of the species change their eating habits with age. The hawksbill turtle has a narrow, jaw-shaped head that responds at an acute angle, and is adapted to obtain food from cracks in coral reefs. They eat mainly sponges, but sometimes a small amount of shrimp, squid, and tunicates.

Green carnivores are primarily carnivorous from hatch to juvenile size and then move to the herbivorous diet. Green turtles have well-distributed jaws and are adapted to a basic vegetarian diet consisting of algae. As adults, they are mostly herbivorous sea turtles, although sometimes they also eat sponges and jellyfish.

The sea creatures of the deep have caught our thoughts for centuries and for many good reasons. Once you venture out of the zone where the ambient light penetrates, the dark seabed is filled with captivating and extraordinary critters. Most of the creatures must rely on food that floats from the top.

We are very little familiar with the sea creatures of the deep, in fact, we are well familiar with the moon surface. The amazing thing is the sea creatures of the deep sea are really fascinating.

Here is a list of 10 fascinating Sea creatures of the deep.

Anglerfish

Anglerfish is one of the fascinating sea creatures of the deep. Imagine that you followed a warm and welcoming light and that you found the mouth of sharp teeth straight behind it. This is the bad fate of the anglerfish’s prey.

Anglerfish, sea creatures of the deep sea have developed an effective hunting method: they use their brilliant lure, composed of specialized bacteria, to attract crustaceans and fish as they approach sharks. However, only females have traps. It is also used to attract the males, who will bite the female and fertilize the eggs.

A pair of fanfin anglers (Caulophryne jordani).

Boxer snipe eel

The boxer snipe eel is one of the sea creatures of the deep belongs to a family of snakes whose thin bodies shrink by about five feet and end with tails like wicks.

The large eel eyes are adapted to capture all possible light beams when the depths of the boat are explored with curved jaws and bill shape. A very narrow body plan resulted in an exceptional location for the anus of the snipe eels just behind the head of the animal.

Leafy Sea Dragon

Thanks to the many yellow or green appendages that let it hide in seaweed, this creature 14 inches deep, closely linked to the pipefish and sea horse, settles in the waters of southern and eastern Australia. They feed on small crustaceans called sea lice and, as with seahorses, they name males of the species to incubate their eggs.

The animals look like a seahorse in terms of size and shape, but they have small leaf-shaped fins camouflaged by predators. Sea dragons grow awkwardly with their transparent pectoral and dorsal fins, but they travel mainly with the current.

Leafy seadragons (Phycodurus eques) are named for the leaf-like growth on their bodies, which helps to camouflage them

Ostracodes

They have developed at the beginning of the Cambrian, around 545 million years ago, and are usually in the form of fossils. They still live in all the aquatic habitats, from small ponds to the deep sea.

These creatures have bloomed for thousands of years a little more than floating heads. In the absence of fragmentation, their bodies and heads are merged, hidden in a spherical shell with the appendages of the creature. This special type of ostracode contains mirrored reflectors for the eyes that it uses to identify small floating objects in the depths.

Vampire Squid

This is one of the mysterious sea creatures of the deep with a scarlet body that would reside up to 900 meters deep. Here, oxygen saturation can be as low as 3%, but vampire squid can easily thrive in these suffocating conditions. The reddish color of this squid is not the only reason for its scary name. If you take a closer look, you will notice that the 8 arms, each with rows of fleshy spines, are connected to each other by a layer similar to that of skin.

Larval Longarm Octopus

Larval Longarm Octopus will eventually bear
its name by developing long thin arms that extend up to seven times the length
of the octopus. Scientists have reported cases where this type of predation was
avoided by mimicking the shape, color, and behavior of the fish while moving on
the seabed.

Sea Butterfly

Sea butterfly is a beautiful creature of the
deep sea. True to its name, sea butterfly is a member of the family of sea
snails that seems to fly in the water. Two fat wings emerged from the snail’s
feet, allowing it to float in the water column and feed passively on the
plankton while maintaining protection in its transparent shell.

Sea butterfly is an incredibly beautiful creature of the Deep sea

Glass Squid

This is one of the fascinating sea creatures
of the deep that revolves around the water with swollen, hunted eyes and short
arms. Members of the glass squid species have light-emitting tissues on their
lower surfaces, which are used to deceive predators and hide the shape of their
eyes. This species can be found in the shallow and middle depths of open oceans
around the world. Growing up, they tend to look for deeper water. Transparency and sunlight make really awesome
camouflage.

Flamingo Tongue Snail

The flamingo snail is located in the waters of the Caribbean and
Atlantic and feeds on poisonous sea fans. While eating on the sea fans, the
flamingo tongue snail absorbs its poison and becomes poison, disturbing its
potential predators. Although the flamingo snail is a relatively common sight,
its unique exterior makes it a popular underwater souvenir for the divers,
which also contributes to the novelty of modernity.

The colors of the Flamingo Tongue Snail are breathtaking

Pinecone Fish

Finding food can be a challenge at night, but the pinecone has a secret weapon: natural lighthouses. Bright bacteria inhabit 2 organs of the fish’s lower jaw and produce a beam that illuminates the next meal of the predators. These are found in the western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, and around South Africa, Indonesia, Mauritius, South Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. They prefer areas with coral reefs, caves, and rocks. They are generally found in waters whose depth varies between 20 and 200 meters.

These sea creatures of the deep have to live in extremely difficult conditions, such as hundreds of pressure bars, little food, some oxygen, extreme cold, and no sunlight. Besides these conditions, these creatures can also survive well in harsh environments, such as hadal or abyssal areas, which are devoid of light thousands of feet below from the surface.

Sharks also known as the King of the Ocean are in the list of advanced hunters that have ever seen on the Earth. At the same time, there is still a lot of ambiguity around these very intelligent creatures. Most of the mysteriousness is still hidden within the dark and deep shadows of the ocean.

They are an integral part of the aquatic ecosystems of the planet and deserve our protection as well as attention. According to the studies, the shark species ranges from 350 to 500.

Here is a list of 5 biggest sharks in the world.

5. Pacific Sleeper Shark

Pacific Sleeper Shark is one of the biggest
sharks in the World. It has a rod-shaped
body and a round and short snout. Swimming in the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, Pacific
Sleeper Shark as one of the big sharks in the world reaches 7 meters and weighs
around 907 kilograms that are equal to one ton. It belongs to the somniosid
sharks family. At the time of maturity, its length is about 3.6 meters and
weighs about 350 kg. Pacific Sleeper Shark with bristle skin is greyish black in color.

4. Tiger Shark

Tiger sharks commonly called sea tigers live
in the temperate and tropical waters of the Pacific Islands. A tiger shark gets
its name from the dark ribbons on its skin that resemble those of a tiger and
fades with the age. The spindle body has a sharp nose at a narrow snout tip.

The tiger shark is 7.6 meters long and weighs
approximately 1360 kilograms. Tiger sharks have a very complete diet that
includes fish.

Tiger sharks in The Bahamas
Credit : Gerald Schömbs

3. Great White Shark

The Great White Shark is one of the biggest sharks in the world and is the largest predatory shark. It is also known as the fiercest predators of the ocean.

This shark can are found in the coastline surface waters of almost all the big oceans. Although the reports differ in size, Great White Shark is around 8 meters long and can weigh about 907 kilograms that is almost a ton.

Ocean Ramsey and a massive White Shark.
2. Basking Shark

Basking Shark is the second biggest shark in the world. Basking Shark has a conical body and is covered with a layer of mucus with a gray or brown skin at the back as well as a white tummy. It’s dorsal and pectoral fins are very large, as they can reach two meters.

It measures 8.8 meters or 40.4 feet and weighs 6000 kg. Sharks live in all the oceans of the world, but they predominate in temperate waters under the continental shelf and the pole. The environment of Basking Shark is strongly influenced by food availability.

Basking sharks migrate to west Scotland from the sea off west Africa
By ALEXANDER MUSTARD

1. Whale Shark

The whale shark is probably the biggest sharks in the world, 20 meters long and weighing 12,500 kg. Its spindle body is broad in the middle part and is reduced to the head and the tail.

The head is broad and horizontal, with small eyes on the front. Whale Sharks feed on plankton and travel long distances to find enough food to maintain their size and reproduction.

When discussing the giants of the ocean, the whale shark indisputably tops the list as the largest living shark species in the world. With an astonishing length that can reach up to 60 feet, these gentle titans roam the tropical oceans, primarily feeding on plankton.

Despite their enormous size, they pose virtually no threat to humans, fascinating marine enthusiasts and experts alike.
