Years ago, the wearing of puka shells was traditionally thought to help insure a peaceful and safe ocean voyage, especially for sailors on long and dangerous journeys. Puka shell pendants were made and given to men, women and children who traveled by sea. 

Puka shells are found in Hawaii and are recognizable because of the naturally occurring hole found in each one. Because of this hole, the shells are easily made into “good luck” and “well wishes” jewelry.
