Ever wondered how much plastics is in the ocean. It is believed that much of the plastic that does not end up in the landfill or goes through other waste management methods ends up in the ocean.

Plastic can penetrate the ocean in the form of microplastics or large identifiable elements or specific parts of less than five millimeters in length. Both are a threat to marine life. Large pieces destroy over time to become plastic but do not disappear completely.

How Plastic ends up in the Ocean?

The plastic comes in different forms. Just think of all the plastic materials you use every day: the toothbrush you take in the morning, the container that comes with the lunch, or the water bottle.

Many of the plastic products are disposable items designed to be disposed of, such as water bottles or containers. These are used and quickly rejected. If these wastes are not disposed of or managed properly, they may end up in the ocean.

Before thinking about how much plastics is in the ocean, the plastic we use every day ends up in the oceans in 3 ways:

  1. Discard the plastic in the container when it can be recycled
  2. Cluttering
  3. Products going down the drain

Whether or not we want to waste, there is always a possibility that the plastic is thrown into the sea.

To make a big change, you must take small steps and we all have the ability to make a difference.

Facts about Plastics in the Ocean

If you are thinking about how much plastics is in the ocean, it is an unfortunate situation that the amount is a lot worse than even we think. The amounts of plastics that flood our oceans, lakes, and rivers are more than unpleasant and harmful to wildlife and plants.

Here are some facts about how plastic poses a threat to health, wildlife, and planet.

  • About 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year. Of these, there are 236,000 tons of miniature plastic, small pieces of broken plastic smaller than the nail.
  • There are 5 huge plastic patches in the world’s oceans. These huge absorptions of plastic remains cover large areas of the ocean. One between Hawaii and California is the size of Texas.
  • Every minute, a plastic garbage truck is poured into the oceans
  • By 2050, the amount of plastic will be more than the fish in the oceans
  • Many of the marine organisms cannot distinguish between foods and common plastic elements. Animals that consume plastic often die of hunger because they cannot digest the plastic, which fills their belly and prevents them from eating real food.
  • Many fish consumed by humans, such as cisco, perch and brown trout have consumed microfibers at some point.

Unlike other types of waste, plastics do not degrade. This means that plastics can remain indefinitely and wreak destruction on marine ecosystems. Some plastics float as soon as they enter the ocean, even if all do not float. When the plastic is thrown away, much of it is divided into small pieces called microplastic…
