Some Amazing Characteristics of Shark Skin

Along with various other characteristics that are making shark unique, shark skin is also being considered as unique in multiple ways. However, here we have brought some of the most amazing qualities of shark skin which will surely let you know why it is unique. So, here we go:

Texture of shark skin

Shark skin is also being characterized by its contrast between slippery appearance and rough tactile texture. It is because Shark skin is not made of traditional fish scales. Small teeth on skin surely sound creepy, but this can be the best description of what the scales which are making shark skin tactile look like.

These scales are actually attached to the skin at its base. While, the visible part of this is known as the crown, similar to the tooth crown. Even this crown ends up with a pointing tip which is facing towards the tail of the sharks. This is the reason why the texture of the shark skin is smooth when you are rubbing it in head to tail direction, but it feels rough when you are moving your hand in the opposite direction. In fact, sharp skin crowns are too rough that the ancient Greeks used it as a sand paper to make their wooden objects smoother.

Well, these crowns are sharper because most obviously these are being used to protect the skin of a shark. These scales are also serving as the first line of defense against coral reefs, rocky areas, marine litter, and parasites.

Color of shark skin

Sharks are usually drably counter-shaded which means that the bottom and top of the shark skin contains different color. However, when it comes to the color of the top side then it is usually darker than the bally or bottom side of the skin.

When the sharks are being viewed from the upper side then the top skin and water color look similar while similar is the case when it is being viewed from the bottom side because of the light-toned skin and light-colored water. This is what usually helps sharks to hunt in the perfect stealthy manner and make it able to sneak up and prey without being detected.

Skin thickness

Sharks usually come with the very think
skin especially whale sharks which contains up to 4 inches thick skin.

These are some of the amazing characteristics of the unique shark skin which are surely going to be effective for you to know.

When you are inside of the Ocean, you don’t know when and who will come to attack you. The primary rule of the Ocean is that the big fish eats small fish and that goes on.

Only the one who is capable enough to survive can survive in this dangerous water world. There are hundreds of dangerous predators in the Ocean. The most popular name of an Ocean predator is the Shark.

HOW FAST
CAN SHARKS SWIM?

Everybody must
wonder how fast can sharks swim. Keep in mind that sharks are predators, just
like lion and tigers are predators on the land. The sharks have to swim faster
to catch their prey. Their speed is the key to their deal meal. If they don’t
swim faster, they will never be able to catch what they want to catch. The
speed of a shark depends upon its species. The smaller and shorter sharks tend
to move faster than big and fatty sharks.

So, next time when you are fishing in your boat in the middle of the Ocean, and you see a fin of the shark. Then keep in mind that this beautiful yet dangerous animal can swim faster than your boat.

FASTEST
SHARK:

When you compare
the speed of different species of the sharks, then a short-fin mako shark would
win the comparison. If you are a diver or fisherman, then you are lucky because
humans do not normally encounter this shark, and if it does, it does not attack
them.

Research from
New Zeeland claims that this shark can swim at the speed of 95.5 KPH. This is
more than many other fast-swimming animals of the sea. But this much speed of
the mako is rarely seen. On average, Mako is to swim at the speed of 60 KPH.
Even this much speed is more than enough for a predator to catch its prey. The
speed of the mako allows it to catch faster fishes too. It can even catch
swordfish, which is found to be one of the fastest swimming animals.

In short, mako is the king of the speed in the Ocean. It is considered as a cheetah of the water world. You only wish that this dangerous animal doesn’t encounter you in your life. If it does, then that might be the last day for you.

SPEED OF
DIFFERENT SHARKS:

Sharks are very
dangerous, but they rarely attack humans. Different species of sharks swim at a
different speed. For example, the great white shark swims at the speed of 40
KPH, the speed of the tiger shark is 32 KPH, the Blue shark has 39.4 KPH, and the
whale shark is slowest of them all. It swims at a speed of 9.7 KPH.

CONCLUSION:

Next time when
you encounter the shark, don’t start swimming because it can swim way faster
than you. Just stay there and let the shark go away because, on average, cases,
the shark does not attack humans.

The world of the ocean is filled with
mysterious and unique creatures. Man has always been interested in the world of
these mysterious creatures, especially due to the fact that they are able to
only breathe under water, while man isn’t able to do that.
Some creatures are more formidable than the others, underwater, and some
creatures are just meant to not be messed around with. One of those creatures
is the great white shark.

Here are some facts about the white and shark, and finally we will discuss how many teeth does a white shark have :

It is the most common shark in the Ocean world

The great white shark is the most popular
and most common shark in the ocean world, and almost everyone associates sharks
with great white shark.

The great white shark is also known as the great white, white shark, or white pointer.

The white shark is a vulnerable specie

The great white shark was so hunted back in
the earlier centuries that it has now become a vulnerable specie, that can go
extinct should a mass hunt begin again.

The white shark lives around 70 years, and is about 11 to 20 feet long. The female sharks are bigger in size than the male shark, in general.

Shark Necklace from the ATOLEA Shark jewelry collection

How many teeth does a white shark have?

Now that we know what the great white shark
actually is, let us understand the inner portion of the shark, where the teeth
are located:

The number of teeth in a great white shark depends on what portion of lifespan they are going through. In general, the total teeth in a great white shark equals the number of teeth they have lost, multiplied by the lifespan of the white shark, and then the remaining teeth at the end of the white shark’s lifespan are added to that counter.

Sharks continuously lose and rotate teeth during their lifetime. They have around 5 rows of developing teeth, behind their main jaw, which has around 24 teeth.

The developing teeth row have twice the
number of teeth per unit area, as compared to the main jaw. This means that
they have 48 multiplied by 5, number of times teeth behind their main jaw.

The developing teeth replace the main jaw’s
teeth as soon as the main jaw teeth break. And they break very fast. But the
new developing teeth are stronger than before, but they still break
nonetheless.

If we were to add the developing teeth rows with the main jaw teeth, we would find that a white shark has a round-about figure of 264 teeth. Many great white sharks have around 300 teeth, in general, though.

The 300 figure is only for the teeth a
great white shark has at any time.

By adding this 300 with the number of tooth
a shark has lost in its lifespan, we can safely find out how many teeth does a
white shark have in its entire lifetime.

Conclusion

The white shark is one of the largest predatory fishes in the ocean, and the fact that it is able to grow teeth so quickly is just jaw-dropping. No pun intended.

Sharks are one of our planet’s most misunderstood and maligned creatures, and the pressure from human activities on shark populations has been pushing some species of these fish toward extinction.

Humans are killing sharks at an unprecedented rate. An estimated 100 million a year are killed for meat, as byproducts of commercial fishing, pollution, and out of fear. This is causing shark populations to drastically decline in numbers.

While all efforts to protect sharks are important to their survival, some actions (and the organizations behind them) are having an even greater impact. Here are 6 conservation efforts designed to save sharks today.

Never eat shark meat or shark fin soup.

Between 100 and 200 millions sharks are killed each year for their fins. The cartilage in the fins is usually shredded and used primarily to provide texture and thickening to shark fin soup, a traditional Chinese soup. Raise awareness about the shark finning is a good way to help save sharks !

Do Not Use Shark Products

Obviously a great place to start is by not consuming any shark meat. However, there are more products than just shark meat on the market. Shark cartilage and oils are found in a range of products from beauty items to health nutrition.

So before consuming any product, make sure it does not use any shark materials. By boycotting shark products, you will reduce market demand, causing companies to stop killing sharks to make these products.

Some brands, like Bell Lifestyle Products, argue their cartilage comes from by-products of the food/restaurant industry, not from sharks illegally finned. But these days, every major grocery in Greenpeace’s seafood report card, including Loblaws, Sobeys and Metro, has banned shark meat from its fish counter because of serious sustainability worries. Even those fisherfolk who use the whole shark for steaks and supplements are feeding the beast when they sell their fins off, too.

The shark surfer | Thomas Peschak

Let Your Voice Be Heard When You See Abuse

If you live near the oceans or are just on vacation, if you see someone abusing sharks, speak out.

Whether they are poking and prodding them or illegally hunting them, tell the authorities what you’ve seen, Most beaches have protections for the local marine species, so if someone is mistreating a shark, you can help defend the shark by reporting the action.

Be Smart When Eating Seafood

Since over ½ of the 73,000,000 sharks caught yearly are caught as by-catch, and some of the commercial fisheries are headed for collapse in a few short decades, please eat sustainably.

Commercial fishing negatively impacts sharks in two ways. First, it reduces the populations of their food sources, especially sharks that rely on bony fish as their primary food source. Then, sharks are often killed as a byproduct of commercial fishing. Sharks are attracted to the movement of the trapped animals, and may try to feed on them, getting caught and strangling in the net. They may also be accidentally caught by fisherman looking for other seafood. So by simply reducing your consumption of seafood, you can reduce the number of sharks killed each year.

If you eat fish, you should do it wisely – and sustainably.

Learn To Know Sharks

Big media events such as Shark Week help educate the public about sharks and their mysterious lives under the ocean, but there are plenty of other opportunities for shark conservation education.

Groups such as the Shark Alliance, Oceana, Shark Angels, Shark Stewards, and Ocean Conservancy try to take a bite out of the mythos of the shark, and offer plenty of resources to both educate ourselves and to take action for endangered shark species.

And some aquariums are even offering first-hand shark experiences to give people a shark’s eye view of these amazing creatures.

By educating yourself on the issues, you can find effective ways to help. You can also help teach others about sharks and inspire them to get involved as well.

Spread Awareness On Social Media

Social media is a powerful tool to spread awareness about sharks and shark conservation. So the next time you read an interesting article or blog post about sharks, share it with your network, it’s a powerful ways to help save shark by raising awareness !

The work seems to be paying : Since 2011, there has been an estimated 50-70% decrease in shark fin consumption in China and in 2016, WILD AID conducted a follow-up survey of Chinese residents to measure changes in attitudes and awareness toward shark conservation. The survey found that 93% of respondents had not consumed shark fin in the previous 6 years.

Many people think of the great white shark as a scary creature. After all, it has those big teeth and it does have a reputation for chomping at humans. However, the things that make the great white shark frightening are also the things that make it amazing.

Indeed, the great white shark is one cool animal (even though it is partly warm-blooded). It’s shaped like a torpedo. It’s older than dinosaurs. It’s heavier than a car. It has a mouth big enough to swallow a seal whole. Want to learn more? Below are ten more cool facts about great white sharks.

-Great white sharks are grey with a white underbelly, from where they get their name. They have a streamlined shape and powerful tails that propel them through the water at over 60km per hour!

-They go through more than 1000 teeth in their lifetime. The great white shark can have 300 teeth arranged in seven rows at any time in their life, each pointed, razor-sharp and up to 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) long. These teeth aren’t very strong, though. In fact, they come off easily. When they do, the great white shark eats the broken tooth whenever possible, in order to reuse the calcium.

-Great white sharks have such a strong sense of smell that they can detect a colony of seals two miles away. And check this out – if there was only one drop of blood in 100 litres of water, a great white would smell it!

-When a great white gives birth, she usually has two to ten youngsters, called “pups“. But she shows no care for her offspring – in fact, she may even try to eat them! Taking care of themselves, the newborn pups will immediately swim off into the ocean.

-Many white sharks have been shown to heal themselves for minor wounds, but there has never been such a severe case as ‘Prop’ – a Gansbaai shark that was nearly split in half by a boat propeller. In 9 months, this shark’s wounds were entirely healed

–They have blue eyes – No “black dead eyes of a killer” here! They actually have beautiful baby blues.

–We know very little about them. Reproduction isn’t the only feature of white sharks we don’t know enough about — they are incredibly hard to study, and not just because they’re huge ocean-dwelling carnivores.

White sharks are at the top of ocean food chain so they’re bound to be rare, which makes counting them and getting meaningful data very tricky. Satellite tags have let Australian scientists track the incredibly impressive journeys of around 50 white sharks.

– They like to roll their eyes. And it’s not because they’re annoyed or frustrated. Rather, great white sharks roll their eyes to the back of their heads whenever they attack, so they don’t actually see what they’re attacking, in order to protect their eyes from getting damaged.

They don’t have eyelids, after all, like we do. When someone tries to hurt your eyes, by throwing sand at you, for example, you instinctively close your eyes to protect them, but since great white sharks can’t close their eyes, they roll them back instead.

Most animals they pursue, after all, don’t go down without a fight and during the fight, the great white shark can get hurt. In fact, many great white sharks have scars left behind by their previous attempts at meals. Wounds may heal but if a great white shark is blinded, it will never get its eyesight back and will have a hard time finding food in the future.

– They have to keep moving. Remember Dory’s mantra, “Just keep swimming”? Well, great white sharks actually have to live by this, literally. This is because great white sharks breathe by a process called ram ventilation.

As they swim along, the water “rams” into their mouths, and they let it out through their gill slits, to extract the oxygen they need. Therefore, if they stop moving, they’ll stop breathing and they will die.

-They are named after the stripes on their sides which fade as they get older and bigger.

-Tiger sharks are one of the biggest sharks in the world and have been measured at up to 5.5 metres long.

-They have a massive appetite and will eat almost anything, including fish, sea turtles and marine mammals, but will also eat human rubbish : Car licence plates, baseballs and car tyres have been found in their stomachs. They are known as “wastebaskets of the ocean”

-Tiger sharks have special teeth that are serrated for sawing and cutting through the toughest prey, especially turtles. Like other species of sharks, they are able to replace their teeth with rows of new teeth.

-They are found near the coast all around the world, especially in warmer waters.

-Tiger sharks are the second most dangerous species of sharks for humans. Unlike great white sharks (which are the most dangerous), tiger sharks will often eat victim after attack. Luckily, encounters between tiger sharks and humans are extremely rare.

-Tiger sharks are solitary creatures most of the time. They will gather in larger groups during mating season or for the collective feeding when the large prey is available.

-They are migratory species. They travel several thousand miles each year toward warmer waters when temperature of water drops down.

-After internal fertilization (male inserts sperm directly into the female’s body), eggs develop inside the mother’s womb. Pregnancy lasts around 16 months and ends with 20 to 90 baby tiger sharks.

-The pups are not given any care after birth and have to find food on their own, often staying together in order to stay safe.

-Because tiger shark pups are abandoned, many of them end up getting preyed on by larger sharks. Even adult tiger sharks, though, are not safe from predation. They can still be eaten by great white sharks — which can grow over 17 feet long — and by killer whales, which hunt in groups called pods.

-Tiger sharks have powerful jaws that allow them to crack the shells of sea turtles and clams.

-Tiger sharks can survive up to 50 years in the wild.

-Once they find something fit for a meal, tiger sharks move very slowly, like tigers silently stalking their prey. This slow movement, together with the camouflage provided by the tiger shark’s skin, which is bluish-green on top and white on the bottom, prevents the shark from being seen until the very last moment, when it makes its move and it is too late for the prey to escape. With one powerful snap, the tiger shark secures its meal and finishes it within minutes.

-Because of its tendency to attack humans, some tiger sharks are hunted as part of shark control programs. They are also widely hunted for sport as well as for their fins, skin and liver, which is a rich source of Vitamin A. They are also accidentally caught by fishing boats catching tuna, swordfish and squid.

-In spite of these threats, though, the tiger shark continues to thrive because of its large, global population and high reproductive rates. Currently, it is classified only as a Near Threatened species, which means it is not considered Endangered.

-Some people may consider the tiger shark a menace or a trophy, but some native Hawaiians considered it a sacred spirit or the spirit of one of their ancestors, reincarnations of family members who passed away a long time ago. They especially believed that the eyes of a tiger shark had magical powers and that by eating the eyeball of a tiger shark, one could see better, even see the future. According to legend, the mother of the great King Kamehameha asked for tiger shark eyeballs during her pregnancy in hopes that the son she was carrying would become a great leader.
